2007 Vaganova Nutcracker Teacher Seminar
with
Mansur Kamaletdinov, Master Ballet Teacher
Former Principal Dancer, Teacher, Ballet Master, Choreographer and
Acting Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Ballet.

PITTSBURGH, PA
OCTOBER 20-21, 2007 and NOVEMBER 10-11, 2007

During this fall Nutcracker rehearsal season, Mansur will hold two special Teacher Seminars which will teach teachers and students the original choreography of the Russian Nutcracker and demonstrate to Teachers how to teach their own students this repertoire. Although there have been several variations on the choreography of the original ballet, Mansur teaches the closest surviving choreography to the original as conceived by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. When Petipa was first commissioned to choreograph the ballet, he began work on it but fell ill and handed over the bulk of the work to his assistant, Ivanov. After a few experimental attempts at changes by other choreographers, Vassily Vainonen’s version returned the staging to its classical roots and is thus most likely the closest to Ivanov's original. This was the standard as performed by the Kirov/Maryinski and Bolshoii Ballets since his production premiered in 1934 and is the version that Mansur learned from Vainonen himself which he teaches to his students and will be teaching in this seminar. Mansur’s students will act as demonstrators and assistants during the seminar. The Seminar is interactive so that participating teachers will be able to gather hands on experience instructing the dancers through the teaching techniques they acquire and learn.Teachers are welcome to bring up to two of their students free of charge to participate and/or observe. The program will also give a thorough of Classical Exercise and Technique and the methods for properly teaching students to prepare for learning Repertoire.
